This course is targeted for grade 12 students, whose test scores on the Postsecondary Educational Readiness Test (P.E.R.T.) are at or below the established cut scores for reading, indicating that they are not yet “college ready” in reading or simply need some additional instruction in content to prepare them for success in college level reading. Students will learn to identify and make inferences from passages covering prose, humanities, natural sciences and social sciences. In addition students will learn strategies that help them with these timed, standardized tests.

- delineating and evaluating the argument and specific claims in a text, including the validity of the reasoning as well as the source, relevance and sufficiency of the evidence;
- writing in response to reading, emulating authors’ structures, word choices, styles, etc.
MATERIALS:
- Mechanical pencil (extra lead) or 3 sharpened pencils.
- Loose leaf paper and/or 3-ring binder and/or notebook
CLASS RULES:
- ID badges must be worn at all times.
- Stay in your assigned seat or area.
- Wait to be recognized before speaking.
- No food, drinks or gum are allowed in the classroom.
- Use the laptop only when instructed and for the assigned work.
- All cell phones and Ipods must be turned off and put away.
